What to Expect From Your First Therapy Session.

Starting therapy can bring up a lot of nerves. That’s completely normal. Every therapist has been a client themselves as part of their training, so we understand exactly what those first-session jitters feel like. We want the process to feel safe, gentle, and as comfortable as possible.

It’s Normal to Feel Nervous

Most people feel anxious before their first appointment simply because they don’t know what to expect. Some feel emotional the moment they sit down, sometimes even before speaking. This can be from relief, overwhelm, or knowing they’re finally facing something important. All of this is welcome. Therapists see emotional responses every day, and nothing you share or feel will surprise us. Our role is to guide you through the process with care and steadiness.

What Happens in Your First Session with Our Therapists

In the first session, I begin by taking a few basic details, like your date of birth and address before telling you a little about myself and the type of therapy I offer.

The main purpose of the early sessions is to understand what has brought you here. You don’t need polished answers, but if you’d like to feel prepared, you might reflect on:

  • What has led you to seek therapy now?
  • Are there specific worries or issues you want support with?
  • What are your hopes or goals for therapy?
  • How would you know therapy has been helpful?

Some people come with clear goals. Others simply want to explore their thoughts, patterns, or personal growth. Both are absolutely valid.

Other Things You Can Expect

Confidentiality

I’ll explain what confidentiality means in therapy, including the rare situations where it may need to be broken for safety.

History Taking

We’ll explore relevant parts of your personal, medical, and psychological history.

Note-Taking

Some therapists take notes, others don’t. If I do, it’s simply to stay organised, never something to worry about.

Therapeutic Agreement & Logistics

We’ll go through practicalities like session length, fees, cancellations, and how often we’ll meet.

Questions & Next Steps

You’ll have space to ask anything you’re unsure about, and together we’ll outline an initial plan based on what you’ve shared.

Homework or Reflections

Sometimes there may be a small task or reflection to think about between sessions to support our work.

Therapy Takes Time

Your first session might feel messy or fragmented. That’s okay. Experienced therapists are used to gently piecing things together. Over time, sessions become more focused as we gain clarity about your goals.

Between sessions, I reflect on our work and receive regular clinical supervision. This is a confidential professional requirement that ensures safe, effective practice and supports me in helping you move toward your therapy goals.

How to Get the Most Out of Your First Session

  • Keep an open mind and allow yourself to engage with the process.
  • Take notes if it helps you remember key points.
  • Reflect on your goals, even if they’re tentative.
  • Prepare any questions you want to ask about therapy or my approach.
  • Gather any relevant information, such as past therapy experiences.
  • Think about practicalities like availability and budget, and share any concerns early.

A Final Reminder

Your first session is a two-way process. You’re not only being assessed, you are also assessing whether I’m the right fit for you. It’s completely normal if the connection doesn’t feel immediate. Sometimes it builds slowly, and sometimes you may realize you’d prefer a different approach or personality. That’s part of the process, and it’s always okay to change therapists if needed.
